And on this day in 1923 – Bessie Smith recorded “Downhearted Blues” for Columbia Records. Now this was the first song that Bessie Smith recorded and the first hit for Columbia Records. The record sold 780,000 copies, but check this out – she was paid $125 and received no royalties.
And on this day in 1945 – Singer Lenny Williams was born in Pinebluff, Arkansas.
