Attacks on the US voting process are real. Dan Coats, the Director of National Intelligence, recently stated that “…the warning signs are there. The system is blinking. It’s why we are at a critical point today. The digital infrastructure that serves this country is literally under attack.”

The news team spoke with Susan Korbel of the Bexar County Election Protection Coalition, the local group that joined the efforts of other national organizations advocating for paper ballots, more secure registration and audits by Elections Departments nationwide.

In an official letter Korbel sent to the County Commissioners Court, which included Jacquelyn Callanen, Bexar County Elections Administrator, Korbel stated “Protecting the voting process is the responsibility of each county, so we are seeking information which will assure us that all steps are being taken to protect the November Election.”

She urges the Bexar County Commissioners to take the following actions:

  • Bexar County Elections Department should change to paper ballots, allocating sufficient funds to print ballots, purchase optical scanners and technical support to read paper ballots and educate the electorate.
  • Secure funding from the State of Texas Help America Vote Act (HAVA) and/or other sources to reimburse costs of transition.
