Florida Governor Rick Scott declared a state of emergency and urged evacuation as Hurricane Michael was upgraded to a deadly Category 4 storm system expected to hit the Florida Panhandle and sweep through Georgia this afternoon.
According to NASA’s Earth Observatory “What began as a tropical disturbance in the Caribbean Sea on October 2nd, went on to graze the Yucatan Peninsula and then strengthen into Hurricane Michael. The storm continued on its way through the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico.”
Governor Scott pleaded with residents during the emergency press conference to leave their homes and take care of their families. The storm has sustained winds of more than 100 miles per hour and has caused fatalities in Central America caused by the excessive rainfall and hurricane storms over the weekend.
Georgia and Alabama have also declared a state of emergency.
