A NEW LEGAL OPINION released by the Justice Department could further restrict online gambling, making it illegal in all forms.

The Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel on Monday made public a November opinion that reverses an Obama-era opinion on the Wire Act, a federal law that bans bettors from transmitting gambling data across state lines. That 2011 opinion declared the Wire Act applied only to sports gambling.

The latest opinion could affect states like Delaware, Nevada and New Jersey where online gambling is legal and other states that have proposed legislation to do the same. It also follows the Supreme Court’s 2018 decision that paved the way for states to legalize sports gambling.
