Spurs Select Miami’s Lonnie Walker in NBA Draft
Written by Evan Shimek on June 22, 2018
The Spurs’ signature draft day luck has returned once again as they selected Lonnie Walker IV with the #18 pick. Walker, 6’5 and 205 pounds, was projected to be selected no later than pick #11 by the consensus NBA mock draft. Falling seven spots seemed unlikely for the hyper-athletic shooting guard, who had averaged eleven points in a tough ACC conference. Lonnie joins the Spurs in a period of transition and uncertainty as superstar Kawhi Leonard forces his way out—and the logjam of the backcourt will only intensify as we add another shooting guard. Nonetheless, Dejounte Murray, Patty Mills, Danny Green, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili are exactly who you’d want as your mentors if you were Lonnie Walker.
Steal for the Spurs with Lonnie Walker. A guy I had ranked as the 3rd best guard in the draft behind Luka Doncic and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Clearly some ?s about the medical but his game is built for the NBA. Athlete with tools and a dynamic stroke. Murray-White-Lonnie is fun.
